High winds wreak havoc on Capital Region - Gusts up to 67 mph down trees, tear roofs off buildings, knock out power; 1 death reported"
By KATE PERRY, Staff writer, Albany, New York Times Union
Last updated: 1:59 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2006
High winds whipped through the area this morning, ripping roofs off buildings, tearing trees from the ground and knocking out power across the Capital Region.
In Saratoga Springs, a state Department of Transportation truck was crushed by falling pine trees and its driver was killed, according to DOT authorities.
Four Troy schools lost power during the high winds, closing three and requiring students at one to live without electricity for two hours.
Ray O'Keefe, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Saratoga Springs experienced the highest winds, reaching 67 mph.
Details were few on the DOT truck accident as emergency workers responded to the Avenue of the Pines in Saratoga Spa State Park.
Police have closed the historic avenue and Route 50 between West and Congress avenues while they investigate, and ambulances were dispatched.
In the Spa park, city police said five or six trees blew on to the road, blocking travel.
High winds also blew off the roof at 133 Spring St. in Saratoga Springs, sending it flying through the air to the middle of Court Street, 20 to 30 feet away.
Jim Burns, president of Burns Management Corp., which owns the building, said no one was hurt and a construction worker will put on temporary roof later today.
A demolition company has been contacted to remove the roof from Court Street.
Elsewhere in the Capital Region,
** the Aramatic Refreshment Services building at 720 Fourth St. in Watervliet lost its roof and was evacuated just after 10 a.m., said Battalion Chief Thomas Holmes of the Watervliet fire Department.
** in Schenectady, fire and code enforcement officials were examining a State Street building that lost part of its roof.
Across the region, downed trees and thunderstorms caused power outages.
According to the Niagara Mohawk communications office, 94,000 people were without power before noon state-wide, and that number is expected to fluctuate throughout the day.
"There are 10,000 without service mostly in Amsterdam, Clifton Park, Glenville and Troy."
"We expect these numbers to continue to grow.''
Outages are expected to last into tomorrow.
In Saratoga power was out in portions of the city's south side.
Traffic signals were out along parts of Broadway and the city's west side.
A transformer in front of Doyle Middle School in Troy blew at 10:30 a.m., knocking out power to that school and to Troy High School next door.
School 14, located behind Troy High, also lost electricity.
"One of our employees saw it, right in front of Doyle Middle School,'' Superintendent Lonnie Palmer said.
"The prediction from the power company is it was going to be several hours before they could repair this.''
Palmer said a decision was made to close the schools because toilets could not flush and hot meals could not be served at lunch time.
The superintendent was in his office dealing with the multiple outages, though the power was out at the administrative building next to School 14 too.
John O'Malley, a spokesman for Verizon Wireless said phone service was interrupted by downed phone lines, which ruptured their cell tower connections and interrupted calls from cell phones to land lines.

A smaller number of buses were available than at the usual dismissal times so students were released in shifts.
Students at the middle school were let go at 11:45 a.m.
A second run carried students from Troy High and School 14, with the last students leaving around 12:15 a.m.
At School 16, the electricity was lost at noon.
With only two hours to go until the normal dismissal time, Palmer said there was too little time to call parents and arrange alternate busing.
"We knew we wouldn't have time to make the calls,'' he said.
On the western side of the Capital Region, in Rotterdam, two power poles snapped on Schermerhorn Road, blocking the street and cutting power to an area near Rotterdam Square Mall, including the traffic lights on West Campbell Road, according to dispatcher Marie Gage.
Patrolman Keith Collins played rodeo hero on Fred Road when he responded to a call of a shed run wild.
The wind had picked up the 10' by 10' aluminum structure.
"It was blowing down the road, completely upright, like it was sailing,'' Collins said.
"Ten years in law enforcement -- what the hell do I do with a shed?''
He called the dispatcher: "I'll be in foot pursuit of the shed.''
He ran up and jumped on the shed, trying to beat it down, and a neighbor tossed him some rope.
He caught the shed, pulled it back to the lawn it had left and lashed it to a tree.
Fallen trees closed Outer Drive, off Altamont Avenue, but it is now reopened.
"It came through our west end of town, then there was a lull, and then it hit the east,'' Gage said.
The winds also caused several additional road closures.

Well, that's not an easy decision...the plastic and metal rakes are too rough for raking around bushes and flowers....so it will be more bamboo for me! I put out food for the birds, so a bit of bamboo for the pandas will be just fine...

In fact this Spring I have much work to do in my gardens...so this year, I'm doing the usual Spring house cleaning in the Winter, so that when Spring arrives I will have the time to tend to my gardening.....I've been doing some garden cleanup this Winter on the mild Spring-like days....first time I've ever been able to do that...

Working outside this winter has been absolutely heavenly on some of those days ....
And yes ...
So far, my roof is doing fine ....
And that is a prime reason that I decided to cover the roof with copper ....
By the time the whole roof is on ...
There should be no way for the wind to be able to get a "grip" on it to do any damage to it ....
And the plywood under that is 3/4 inch tongue-and-groove screwed down with 2- inch screws every six inches ....
So if my roof does get blown off ...

I am losing a leyland cypress to the last snow storm. Snapped in half - and the half that snapped is draped over my backyard fence into my next door neighbor's yard. Getting some help removing it today or tomorrow, but am going to lose the rest of the tree which is too bad. As for the rest, going to wait until it gets a little warmer - and the ground is still frozen.

The young son is visiting his girlfirend in New Jersey leaving Williamstown Friday afternoon. How sweet the college life these days especially when basketball season is over. His girlfriend's lacrosse season is just starting. Hope it isn't too cold in the neighborhood your way Liv.We had a smattering of snowflakes this morning to my surprise, but they are gone now. Should warm up a tad, not too much though. However, the sun isn't shining here. ITS GRAY.
And so - I'm going to the gym to get the endorphins moving.

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package.
"What food might this contain?," the mouse wondered ...
He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.
Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning:
"There is a mousetrap in the house!"
"There is a mousetrap in the house!"
The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me."
"I cannot be bothered by it."
The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house!"
"There is a mousetrap in the house!"
The pig sympathized, but said, "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray."
"Be assured you are in my prayers."
The mouse turned to the cow and said "There is a mousetrap in the house!"
"There is a mousetrap in the house!"
The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse!"
"I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose."
So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap alone.
That very night a sound was heard throughout the house -- like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.
The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught.
In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.
The snake bit the farmer's wife.
The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever.
Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard!
For the soup's main ingredient.
But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock.
To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.
The farmer's wife did not get well; she died.
So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.
The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.
So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember -- when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.
We are all involved in this journey called life.
We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.
REMEMBER: EACH OF US IS A VITAL THREAD IN ANOTHER PERSON'S TAPESTRY; OUR LIVES ARE WOVEN TOGETHER FOR A REASON.
And so ....

Its somewhat warmer in DC - although I still feel the chill from last weekend. It was cold.

I'm not used to dealing or dressing well for wind chill.
It's somewhat warmer in DC - although I still feel the chill from last weekend.
It was cold. Well, Snuf ...
Good to hear from you ..
We were getting ready to send the Mounties out there to look for you ....
And you have to learn that trick of dressing in layers ....
It really does work ....

Well, amy ...
If I gave a truthful answer to that question ...
People might think I had lost my wits ....
And so ....
Yes, I suppose so!

Yes, I suppose so!
:irish1: When I was young ...
Over across the creek ....
In the woods ....
There was a grove of white birch .....
And for me as a kid ....
It was magical in there .....
Those woods are mine now ...
But the birch grove is long gone .....
And it is hard for me to find where it even was ...
I always thought that if I was going to see a unicorn ...
It would be in a place like that ......
And I still do ...
Except the grove is gone ...
And so ..
If I want unicorns in my life ...
Which is never a bad thing at any age ....
I have to make that place happen again ...
And so .....

Well, I froze my ass off in Rhode Island this weekend.
We call that "character building" up here .....
When you have to be out in the cold doing something .....
A couple of winters, I stayed with some folks who had a small herd of cattle on the east side of the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming near Crow Heart Butte .....
Good people who needed a hand that I could lend at that time ....
And I would get in hay for them ...
And then, in the winter .....
Regardless of the weather .....
My job was to help feed the cattle .....
Every morning .....
Regardless ....
Cows eat before humans do ...
And that is that .....
It got so cold a few times that the propane in people's outside tanks would not "flow" .....
So people had no heat ....
The outside tanks had to have little houses around them, to protect them from that phenomena in the real cold of winter ......
The cattle were just out there .....
They had to live or die on their own .....
And that one winter ...
They did .....
They froze to death standing up in a blizzard ......
And when the snow melted ...
There they were .....
You have to learn how to dress when it is like that ...
Or you sure can suffer .....
And that is a fact ....

And that is a fact. Right you are Liv.
Good Morning !
When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is
to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.

You brighten up our world in here, amy .....
Which then has the effect of brightening it up out there ...
And so ....
That is not a bad thing at all ...
So far as I can see anyway ....
And what a pleasant surprise these little treats of yours are to the eye!

- Marcus Aurelius Well, amy, there is a thought to start the day with ....
Every day ....
Warm or cold ...
Sun or rain ....
Whatever .....
I go outside in the morning ...
And the first thing I do is to take a breath of fresh air ...
And then, I listen to what the birds have to say ....
And then ...
Well .....
Who knows?
Until sundown ...
And then ....
That day is over ...
And so ....
What's to get excited about?
Except life itself ...
And so ....
