The final counting of votes in Washington state is expected to be completed this afternoon. However, the final difference between the two candidates for governor is expected to be close enough to trigger a mandatory recount.
If they do a mandatory recount for the governor's race, will they also recount the votes for everything -- e.g. for the presidential candidates? Does anyone know how this works?

Let me explain why I'm asking. There are various small scale recounts going on. In one county in Florida, for example, it looks like there is going to be a recount because of some very odd results for a ballot initiative. If they also recount the votes for president in these various cases, then it will be interesting to see what changes occur and whether there is any correlation with voting technology.

I don't know, but I just found this link that shows the rules for recount in each state. This may shed some light on how it's done. (I lived in your beautiful state for 10 years - really miss it.)

I have found the answer to this question. Unfortunately, only the one office or issue in question gets recounted. So if they do a recount for governor in Washtington state, they will not recount the votes for president.
