it mandates that children attending public schools be screened for mental disabilities and prescribe anti-pyshcotic drugs to them

what's up with that?

Oh, please. We aren't even allowed to tell parents their children have ADHD or need medication. We have to talk about "attentional issues"
(translation: he is drawing Pokemon pictures all during math) or that he is having difficulty with impulse control, (he was pinching the girl in front of him in line...). So, how do we get from here to there???

As for as screening for mental disabilities, this is covered under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, part of the ADA) and there are rigid rules about referrals. Parental consent has to be obtained at every step of the way and disability screening is only done after all other avenues have been exhausted, (tutoring, modifications, summer school, etc.)

(By the way, I'm a public school administrator and this is what I do for a living, referrals to special education, 504 modification plans, discipline plans, behavior modification, etc.)

Who decides if your children are abnormal? Is homosexuality a mental disability? Is being a free thinker or asking questions mentally deficient? Is being the child of a democrat enough to drug you? Who pays for it?

Where are you getting this stuff??? First, sexuality is not considered a disability under the IDEA or ADA. There are EXTREMELY rigid guidelines for determining disabilities. This is covered under federal civil rights legislation and the schools take it very seriously, as do the attorneys who monitor the schools.

I think maybe you might be common-sense impaired. Oops, not allowed to diagnose that, will first have to try to modify for you.

Get some facts before you post. There's your accommodation plan.

here's an article about it

QUOTE
Another critic of the initiative, holistic mental health advocate David Oaks, says the end result of the New Freedom Initiative’s recommendations will be nothing short of "hundreds of thousands of more kids being put on psychiatric drugs." Oaks is director of the mental health advocacy group Mind Freedom.

In Oaks’ opinion, the issues of child mental health are not only more complicated than just testing for disorders and putting kids on drugs, but are also colored by powerful societal pressures and millions of dollars in drug revenues. Oaks has called the president’s plan "No child left undrugged."

Actually that is the point of posting to forums. First, news media doesn't cover this stuff enough. Second, common folks are not going to understand what it means. Third, I'm looking at different forums. Basically when I post something it isn't always because I'm making a statement. I am right now just getting people started in researching it.

Ironically if you give someone a chance to make up their own mind by questioning it you find out more about it. These were just questions I saw from another board. I think it is best if everyone can research this issue in order to come up with their own answer. I don't plan to make the choice for them. I'm just getting the debate started so we can think about it.
so angry I could spit

You understand that few if any of the anti-psychotics are labeled for children and that these medications are not appropriate for use in all diagnosed mental illnesses. The side effects to many of these drugs would leave them open to some very serious (and legitimate) law suits.
