Ok, this might be so far out in left field that it's over the fence and in the parking lot ... And, I must say that I thought of this late at night, after a stressful day and with a slight headache. Needless to say, I might need to revisit my original thought, not only for clarity, but also sanity. So ... here it goes: I don't have any experience with the punch-card voting maching (at least not recently) so I'm not real sure how the ballot is formated or how the machine is set up. But, suppose that the ballot itself is manipulated. More specifically, suppose the stock paper on which the ballot is printed has been manipulated. Suppose that a strip or thread of the ballot is constructed of a heavier weight of paper. If this were possible, then if a particular candidate's name were printed over this area, it would be slightly, but perhaps not so noticably, harder to punch out a clean chad. And, as we've seen in Florida in 2000, a hanging, pregnant or otherwise faulty chad might not be 'read' in the official count. How big of an impact would this have on a precinct's results? Who produces the paper on which the ballot is printed?
It's seems possible, but then again, it seems soooo unlikely ....
No, no, no!!!! Not the chads again, I remember that too well from Gore. Hanging (trapdoor, dangling), pregnant (dimpled) chads, no! I can't take it again! Please, please, say it isn't so!
