Native Americans are camping out at the base of Bear Butte to protest biker bars being built nearby. Indian tribes from across the nation are expected to take part in the six week long protest.

Right at the base of Bear Butte sits a camp filled with traditional Native American tee-pees and modern day tents.

Margie Loud Hawk said, "I believe that we as Native people need to stand up and come together so that none of the development happens around here."

Loud Hawk is one of the people protesting liquor licenses granted to large campgrounds to build biker bars.

Daughter Wanikiyewin Loud Hawk said, "For me personally, it's just that I'm actually taking a stand for our sacred site."

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe owns the land where campers are staying.

Organizer Victorio Camp said, "So from here until August 14th many nations will be stopping through. Many nations will be coming to camp."

Margie Loud Hawk said, "It makes me feel good that we can all come together here."

Protest leaders plan to hold a meeting for Indian tribes before the Sturgis Rally. They want to educate rally goers about the significance of Bear Butte.

Camp said, "Yes, we plan on having protests and marches in the town of Sturgis to show the bikers that we're here and we utilize this mountain for prayers."

They hope their efforts will help them gain support to protect the sacred site. Meantime, a judge could decide on a lawsuit filed against Meade County commissioners by the Native American protestors this week. Opponents filed the lawsuit after commissioners rejected signatures they collected to put the issue to a countywide vote
