CONCORD, N.H. - Several House candidates in next week's primary election are in danger of being kicked off the ballot because election officials said they didn't follow the rules.
One of them is first-term Republican state Rep. James Danforth, who participated in the 2004 Democratic presidential primary.
Danforth said he didn't like Howard Dean or John Kerry and wanted to send a message by voting for someone else.
But when he voted in the Democratic primary, Danforth became a Democrat in the eyes of the state.
The attorney general has asked the Ballot Law Commission to kick Danforth and seven others out of the race.
"I registered as a Republican. I was put on the ballot as a Republican," said Danforth of Andover.
In order to run for office a candidate needs to join either party. A new, mandatory review of voter registration found that eight candidates failed to do so.
The review said four Democrats are listed as undeclared independents, and Danforth and two other Republicans never registered with the GOP. One candidate never registered to vote at all.
