BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shaked the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday and sent shock waves across the southeastern United States, but no damage was reported, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The tremor hit at 10:56 a.m. EDT (14:56 GMT), lasting about 20 seconds, and was felt in parts of Florida, Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama.
The quake was centered about 420 kilometers southwest of Tampa and the USGS said it received more than 2,000 reports from as far away as North Carolina. But the quake was too small to trigger a tsunami warning.
Scientists said Sunday's quake was the largest and most widely felt of more than a dozen earthquakes recorded in the eastern Gulf of Mexico in the last 30 years.
USGS geophysicist Jessica Sigala said residents along the Gulf and as far north as northern Georgia reported feeling the ground shake but there were no reports of damage or casualties on land. Enditem
