Count Every Vote 2004
WCRC is one of the initiating organizations of Count Every Vote 2004 www.counteveryvote2004.org. CEV2004 is a non-partisan project organized to train domestic monitors to observe, document and report on the election process in the southeastern states.
Confidence in the electoral process was badly damaged as a result of the multiple irregularities and voting rights violations that characterized the 2000 presidential elections. Problems in Florida were widely reported, but there were multiple problems in other states as well.
Only 46% of Latinas, 43% of Asian women, and 60% of Black women who were eligible to vote actually did so in the 2000 elections.
Ballots cast by Black voters in Florida were nullified at disproportionately high rates, toping 20% in some predominately Black precincts.
More than 93,000 Georgians who voted in 2000 did not have their votes counted.
In St. Louis, where African Americans make up a majority of eligible voters, 22&37; of registered voters were placed on an "inactive list," causing a "near melt-down" on election day.
Many other cities, counties and precincts reported voter intimidation and harassment, confusing ballots, overcounts and undercounts, elimination of eligible voters from the polls, and other assorted mistakes, irregularities and violations.
The domestic monitors trained and supported by Count Every Vote 2004 will play a significant role in reducing problems at the polls and promoting the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
Remember, the selection of the current administration was determined by only a few hundred votes.
