THanks all for the wishes. Got into Williamstown around 8:00pm tonight. Drive up was pretty uneventful - snow flurries in Jersey but very few. Not too much traffic Its 16 degrees out. Brrr!. Got my boots, shovel, scraper, window washer, squeege, and I'm rarin to go for tomorrow's game. And I have cleats for my snow boots in case this turns out to be more of an ice event. Amy = you asked about snow tires with cleats. Snow tires don't come with cleats. But my cousin who lives in the San Juan mountains in southwestern Colorado has told me about
spiders with spikes - which are a lot easier to put on your tire than chains and work just as well. I'm thinking of getting a set as I have to drive my
San Francisco cousin up to Middlebury the last weekend of January for the Williams/Middlebury basketball game - her son is a starting Freshman on the team at Middlebury - and she recently had achilles tendon surgery so isn't walking too well. After the game that weekend, I will drop her off in Albany for her return flight to SF, and then swing over to Williamstown for dinner with my son before heading south again. Thought that there might just be more ice and snow in Vermont than what I've seen in Williamstown on my drives up here. And I don't want to get stuck in Vermont. My weekend schedule is going to look like this one for the next six weeks. Going to be putting some miles on the car. What moms do for their sons.
The Snuff
Snuff,
The "spider spikes" for tires are interesting....this is the first I've heard of them. I looked them up and you can only drive up
to a speed of 30 MPH with them on the tires, which would be a problem for me and where I drive during the winter. I use snow tires or studded snow tires (my preference)...they have to be take on and off at a garage, but there's no problem with traction or speed. The regulations were changed in PA for studded tires...now we have to put 4 on the car where it was 2 in the past. So, this year we put 2 snow tires on my van...doing okay, so far.
Yes, and what moms do for their sons...dads too, of course.

Here is the web site that my cousin sent me
What do you think?
http://www.spikes-spiders.com/
The Snuff
I think you have to drive more slowly when you use these. And you need to put them on all four tires, not
just two tires. Studded tires aren't allowed in DC. And I had to have the car dealer put the snow tires on my car and
change out the all season tires which are now stored in my garage until Spring when I wil put them back on.

Its worth every precious moment. And I'm starting to get sad about the fact that college ends in June. How fast it went. I can't believe it.
And I haven't yet figured out what I'm going to be doing next Winter during basketball season - I've been going to his games for 10 years.
Old habits hard to break. I'm shooting his games now and am planning to make him a book for graduate of favorite photos taken during his college years from basketball to his Italy trip last summe, country and western concerts with friends in the summer, Ireland two summers ago, associates in summer jobs etc., clowning around with his teammates etc.

You would be much more likely to get stuck in New Jersey than Vermont, Snuf ....
Because Vermont gets snow, and the people who live there every day know that they get snow, they are equipped to deal with snow, and they do it quite well ....
And Middlebury College used to have a SNOWBOWL in the winter, which was a skiing competition, so they are used to getting in a bunch of cars at once up there in the winter, which in many ways IS their season there, in terms of their economy ....
When I was younger, we would take off in a blizzard to drive over to Vermont to go skiing at Stratton, or wherever, and know that we could make it over and back with no real trouble at all, presuming we didn't run into an idiot along the way ....
And the blizzards usually kept them off the road ....

"Capital Region can expect 5 to 10 inches of snow"
By CHRISTEN GOWAN, Staff writer, Albany, New York Times Union
Last updated: 10:27 a.m., Saturday, January 10, 2009
Area residents can expect more snow accumulations than originally was expected from this evening's storm.
National Weather Service forecasters are calling for 4 to 8 inches of snow in the immediate Capital Region on Saturday, said meteorologist John Quinlan.
Snowfall, which should start around 4 p.m., could be heavy at times with an inch to 2 inches per hour around midnight, Quinlan said.
A total of 5 to 10 inches will have fallen by mid-morning Sunday, Quinlan said.
Snow will be heaviest in the southern parts of the Capital Region.
Weather service meteorologists have declared a winter storm warning, which will remain in effect until noon Sunday.
Temperatures will drop into the teens Saturday night and creep up into the mid-20s by afternoon Sunday.
Winds will remain calm, leaving little chance for drifting or blowing snow.

Driving in Snow and IceThe best advice for driving in bad winter weather is not to drive at all, if you can avoid it.
Don't go out until the snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work, and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination.
If you must drive in snowy conditions, make sure your car is prepared (
TIPS), and that you know how to handle road conditions.
It's helpful to practice winter driving techniques in a snowy, open parking lot, so you're familiar with how your car handles. Consult your owner's manual for tips specific to your vehicle.
Driving safely on icy roads - Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
- Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
- Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
- Keep your lights and windshield clean.
- Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
- Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
- Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
- Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
- Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.
If your rear wheels skid... - Take your foot off the accelerator.
- Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they're sliding right, steer right.
- If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
- If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
- If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.
If your front wheels skid... - Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don't try to steer immediately.
- As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in "drive" or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.
If you get stuck... - Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
- Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
- Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
- Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
- Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
- Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

Meteorologist Kevin Lipton urged those who can avoid driving to do so.
He expects clearing roads to become difficult once low temperatures, fluffy snow and traffic are combined.
"It will be quite slippery," he said.
Temperatures will drop into the teens Saturday night and creep up into the mid-20s by afternoon Sunday.
Winds will remain calm, leaving little chance for drifting or blowing snow.

Snow is snow ....
Once it starts, it ends when it ends, and you get what you get ....
There is no real difference between 6 inches of snow and 10 inches of snow, when you get right down to it ...
And I never believe what the weather people are saying about snowfall amounts ...
It can vary by several inches or more up here in just a short distance, depending on elevation and where you are ...
And the snow right here did not start until about 7:00 PM, long after they said it would, which is alright by me ...
But there definitely is snow out there this morning ...
And it is still coming down pretty good ....
So today will be a snowblower day for me, anyway ....

Geez.....there's been a 60 + vehicle pileup on I-93 North about 15 miles east of here between Exits 3 and 4 in Derry, NH. The first pics are coming in on the local news. Cars, trucks, tractor trailers and buses. The number of vehicles involved is just a guesstimate by a state trooper reporting on local TV news right now. Apparently there was an accident which caused a chain reaction. Unfortunately the accident was over a knoll so vehicles were going regular speed as they could not see what was going on over the hill.
Hopefully most of it is just vehicle damage.

Vehicles can be replaced.
No doubt weather was a factor -- 9-10 inches of new snow that is just now starting to taper off.
UPDATE: Just heard that the initial accident that caused the chain reaction involved a bus taking a group of Boy Scouts on a ski trip. Fortunately, neither the driver nor any of the passengers were injured.

Regular speed on a cleared road......and the interstates are always cleared first. It was all just an unfortunate domino-type event.

http://www.wmur.com/news/18456864/detail.htmlNearly 60 Vehicles Involved In I-93 CrashPOSTED: 9:16 am EST January 11, 2009
UPDATED: 11:08 am EST January 11, 2009
DERRY, N.H. -- Nearly 60 vehicles collided on northbound Interstate 93 in Derry, shutting down a portion of the highway Sunday morning.
Derry fire officials said 59 vehicles, including three buses and two tractor-trailers, were involved in the crash.
WMUR News 9's Aaron Kellogg reported from the scene that a charter bus at the front of the crash, which was transporting a group of boy scouts, tried to avoid another car that had gone out of control. Other cars became involved, leading to the pileup.
Another bus, transporting the University of Massachusetts women's hockey team, was also involved in the crash. Some of the women inside the bus wrote on a dry-erase board "We are OK" as a car blocked the door of the bus, preventing anyone from getting out.
State police said the accident occurred Sunday morning between exits 3 and 4 in Derry. Kellogg reported that traffic is backed up for miles.
Emergency crews transported 15 people from the scene with injuries. Kellogg reported at least one man had to be pulled from his vehicle after it slid under a tractor-trailer.
Police have asked people to stay inside their vehicles as crews work their way car by car to determine who is injured.
It was not immediately clear how long the northbound lanes will remain closed. Tow trucks arrived at the scene by 10 a.m. to clear the crash scene.
Kellogg reported the southbound lanes continued to move unimpeded by the crash. Snow was seen on the highway, but officials did not immediately identify a cause. The Associated Press reported that traffic is being detoured to Route 28. New Hampshire state police have asked that motorists avoid Interstate 93.

Watched a video on installation. Doesn't look that difficult to do. Will keep them in my trunk for when I really run into the ice. In the meantime, my cousin
sent me the following link for something called Snow Bootz which wrap around the tire and aren't as heavy as chains. Link is below.
http://www.snobootz.com/benefits.phpSpiders and snowbootz are used extensively out west where chains are normally routinely required. Gas station attendants on the East Coast may not
be as familiar with these in terms of installation. But the guy told me if I have a problem just have the attendant telephone him during installation and they will
walk him through it. After seeing the video, I'm not certain I will even need an attendant to help me put them on. It looks relatively easy.

Hello everyone......glad to continue to report that recovery is happening, having a sort of "off" day today but overall, progress is slowly moving toward whatever passes for normalcy at this age.......I'll be able to resume a number of activities, I really have no restrictions, only must use my common sense, torture to cough phase is history, so happy about that since my bronchiectasis comes with dry coughing fits. Belly was very sensitive after digging around in there with all the instruments. Thursday I am going to attempt doing a bit of my pulmonary rehab maintenance routine at the gym. I slide downhill pretty rapidly in that arena when I miss doing it.
Thankful that Mr. A. B. checked in with Livy......... the welcome mat is out for a visit soon Mr. A.B.
