Musharraf faces bench's fury
The alliance that plans to form Pakistan's new government has made it clear it will reinstate all 63 senior judges sacked for refusing to recognize an emergency order introduced by President Pervez Musharraf last year. Then Musharraf will be asked to step down, and if he refuses, impeachment proceedings will be started. (Mar 11, '08)

Democracy on the dragon's doorstep
No matter what Beijing's censors say, Taiwan's presidential election on March 22 will be a reminder to mainland Chinese that a democratic society flourishes in the "renegade province". The important race, which could write a new chapter in cross-strait relations, has young mainlanders abandoning the hard line of their elders and calling for flexible attitudes and harmonious relations. - Cindy Sui (Mar 11, '08)

A way to stave off Iran sanctions
Indonesia, by abstaining from the United Nations Security Council vote to impose a third round of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, showed up many of its fellow travelers in the Non-Aligned Movement. With their two-thirds majority at the UN, NAM states, given the political will, have the power to influence this major international crisis by pre-empting further UN action against Tehran. - Kaveh L Afrasiabi (Mar 11, '08)

COMMENT
Big bang or chaos: What's Israel up to?
Whether Israel's military logic revolved around the "chaos theory" or the "big bang", its iron-fist intervention in Gaza was neither to send a message to the Israeli public nor to "commit genocide". Rather, Israel's plans are regional, with Gaza being a testing ground. - Ramzy Baroud (Mar 11, '08)

IRAN VOTES
Battle of the conservatives
In Iran there are reformers, conservatives and the really conservative. Those running for office in Friday's parliamentary elections come from the last category. Reformers are expected to win no more than 30 of the 290 seats up for grabs. - Sami Moubayed (Mar 14, '08)

Al-Qaeda steps up its battle in Pakistan
Tuesday's double suicide attacks in Lahore killed at least 30 people, but the real target - a secret underground investigative unit - was missed. Al-Qaeda will try again though, as the newly formed unit poses a direct threat to its revived battle to win hearts and minds in Pakistan. - Syed Saleem Shahzad (Mar 14, '08)

COMMENT
US enters 'checkbook war' with China
With its forces stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan and its leader nearing lame-duck status, some might argue the end of the so-called American empire is near. If Washington's influence is dwindling, a new confrontation will emerge in which nations compete in a "cash war" over access to natural resources. In this battle the biggest spender wins, and the US is already being outpaced by Beijing. - Dmitry Shlapentokh (Mar 14, '08)

Now the Tibet blame game begins

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao on Tuesday assured that "social order" has all but been restored in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, which has been scarred by anti-Chinese demonstrations. Beijing is now left to limit the damage from the high-profile disturbances, and is doing so by squarely blaming the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan leader, for not only instigating the unrest, but also for trying to sabotage China's Olympic dream. - John Ng (Mar 18, '08)

China and India: Oh to be different
Once again, with the unrest in Tibet, Beijing has been caught unprepared and has revealed its inability to deal with dissent and difference, despite the stated goal of creating a harmonious society. In direct contrast, India's diverse polity has flourished against all the odds precisely because of its ability to acknowledge difference. - Pallavi Aiyar (Mar 18, '08)

Two-horse race for Pakistan's hot seat
The battle within the Pakistan People's Party, the dominant group in the new coalition government, is a race between Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of Benazir Bhutto, and party stalwart Makhdoom Amin Fahim. Zardari carries a lot of baggage, while Fahim would be the preferred candidate of President Pervez Musharraf and Washington. The "street-smart" Zardari is up for the fight. - Syed Saleem Shahzad (Mar 18, '08)

Guns? Not me says Viktor Bout
Viktor Bout, the 41-year-old Russian businessman being held on "terrorism charges" in Bangkok for conspiring to sell "millions of dollars worth of weapons" to Colombian guerrillas, is innocent, his lawyer vehemently claims. His reputation for selling guns, guns, guns is being disarmed by his legal team, which says any attempts to extradite Bout to Guantanamo Bay or elsewhere are based only on "blah blah blah". - Richard S Ehrlich (Mar 18, '08)

Khomeini's grandchild breaks her silence
The outspoken views of Zahra Eshraghi, granddaughter of Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic revolution in Iran, have put her at odds with Tehran's conservative hardliners and have drawn a gag order from her own prestigious family. But the recent mass disqualification of reformists in the March 14 parliamentary elections and what she feels are "delusions" maintained by the current regime have moved her to break her silence. Indonesia plays
power catch-up

Indonesia is introducing a crash program to build power stations after underinvestment in the sector threatens to hold back the country's economic growth. The program could result in curbs on exports of fuel such as coal and gas, while failure to maintain growth could damage the re-election prospects of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. - Tom McCawley

In the recently published thriller, The Shell Game, Steve Alten weaves a tale of a neoconservative plot to attack Iran. To overcome resistance, a black op group associated with a Republican administration arranges for nuclear devices to be exploded in two American cities, with planted evidence pointing to Iran. Recent developments make one wonder if fact is following fantasy.

Mahdi Army Stands Firm in its Basra Neighborhoods

By Juan Cole

The US faced a dilemma in Iraq. It needed to have new provincial elections in an attempt to mollify the Sunni Arabs, especially in Sunni-majority provinces like Diyala, which has nevertheless been ruled by the Shiite Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq. But if they have provincial elections, their chief ally, the Islamic Supreme Council, might well lose southern provinces to the Sadr Movement. Continue

Russia challenges US in the Islamic world

For the second year in a row, Russia this month attended the annual summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference as an observer. This signals Moscow's active extension of its involvement in the Middle East by directly challenging the US's traditional dominance of the region. The "peace dividend" of this growing friendship with the Islamic world also translates into hard dollars - from mega projects in Egypt and Saudi Arabia - under the US's nose - to renewed oil interests in Iraq. - M K Bhadrakumar (Mar 28, '08)

North Korea sends a missile warning
After weeks of increasingly acrimonious verbal sparring between North and South Korea, Pyongyang on Friday fired a volley of short-range missiles off South Korea's west coast. Seoul quickly dismissed the incident as routine, but few are falling for that: the nuclear deal with North Korea is coming undone. - Donald Kirk (Mar 28, '08)

Jitters over Syria's Kurdish clashes
The death of three Kurds in clashes with security forces in the Kurdish district of Qamishly in northeastern Syria has angered Kurds not only in Syria but also in neighboring Iraq and Turkey. This is very bad timing for a region on the verge of explosion. - Sami Moubayed (Mar 28, '08)

Afghanistan adrift in misplaced aid
The US$15 billion in donor aid for Afghanistan has to date been focused on numbers, quick delivery, high visibility and meeting benchmarks - a production-line approach to rebuilding a nation. An authoritative new report raises serious questions about this "solution" adopted by the donor community: the evidence in the shattered country is plain for all to see. - Aunohita Mojumdar (Mar 28, '08)

Bush and bin Laden's virtual war
The George W Bush administration's "war on terror" could be summed up in three words - "fragmentation, diminution, destruction". That's fragmentation brought about by "creative destabilization", as in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine; diminution of American prestige, both military and political, and thus of American power; destruction of political consensus within the US for a strong global role. And all this to the advantage of Osama bin Laden. - Mark Danner

Pakistan in tug of war over terror
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani has boldly asserted that from now on parliament will handle all matters of national security, including the all-important "war on terror". President Pervez Musharraf and the military, backed by the United States, have other ideas, and they could use the issue of the reinstatement of the judiciary to make this clear. - Syed Saleem Shahzad (Mar
