CBS, NBC refuse to air church's television advertisement
United Church of Christ ad highlighting Jesus' extravagant welcome called
'too controversial'
CLEVELAND -- The CBS and NBC television networks are refusing to run a
30-second television ad from the United Church of Christ because its
all-inclusive welcome has been deemed "too controversial."
The ad, part of the denomination's new, broad identity campaign set to
begin airing nationwide on Dec. 1, states that -- like Jesus -- the United
Church of Christ (UCC) seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability,
age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation.
According to a written explanation from CBS, the United Church of Christ is
being denied network access because its ad implies acceptance of gay and
lesbian couples -- among other minority constituencies -- and is,
therefore, too "controversial."

This is odd. It's OK to air shows like "Queer Eye", but not a serious ad aimed at including people into a churches' fold. Gimme a break!

Unbelievable isn't it?
I've been saying we need some real "religious leaders" to step forward and show leadership. A church tries to do that and the networks won't let it.

is it really the networks or is it particular affiliates?
They show other ads that could be construed as accepting gays and shows that do the same (hit shows, I might add). Is the controversial part really the fact that it's a church accepting gays?

WTF???? This is totally FUBAR!
Maybe we should demand that they also ban the ads of churches that refuse to accept gay people. This so messed up on so many levels.

I am so done with CBS and NBC - considering some of the ads I saw them air during the elections, this is the height of hypocrisy. I am dumbfounded by their decision to not air this ad. A station who chooses to not support unity is not a station who needs my support.
On the other hand, while I define myself as spiritual and not religious, and do not affiliate with any church or denomination, this has prompted me to make a donation to the United Church of Christ in support of their ministry. I doubt CBS or NBC counted on that. LOL

He sickens me, just as this entire administration does.

ABC showed a thinly disguised opinion piece as news depicting the poster boys of hate crimes as nothing more than simple (minded) thieves, exploiting the neocon's theory that there is no such thing as a "hate"crime.
NBC, CBS, and UPN are calling inclusive calls to worship "Too controversial".
FOX - well we'll just skip FOX for lack of space and time...
People - we CANNOT turn off the squawk box - we must see what messages they're promoting, so we can be informed when we fight back. Too many Americans form their entire belief system from television - from religious content to risque humor - they buy it lock, stock and barrel.
Take it from one who knows - now is not the time to become invisible. We cannot just shut up and wait for this to go away - much as we might like to. There is no security or safety for us if we simply let them run rough shod over us - we have voices in a country where Freedom of Speech means something. So use your voice.
Write to your local affiliates - explaining why you will boycott their sponsors. Email the websites of the offending telelvision stations. Write to your local newspapers and give your editors something to chew over. Contact your local congress members and tell them how you feel.
Be heard. Be seen. Stand up and be counted. Please.

One good ray of light. It is receiving a lot of news coverage and the news (at least
some outlets) are broadcasting the commercial. CNN showed it on their morning show this morning. It is a great ad. Besides the petitions, etc. I say we encourage
more news coverage and the showing of the commercial. It is FREE air coverage.

It exposes the hypocrysy of the white male christian establishment. Therefore, it is too controversial. The lgbt-inclusive references are spotty at best, and hardly overt to the point of invoking controversy.
