War on Iraq: The Americans will discover, as the British learned to their cost in Basra, that they have few permanent allies.

I think of the most specious propaganda we are fed in this supposed GWOT, is the repetetive one "they hate us" which seems to apply universally to the whole planet except the USA.
There are times when I feel the Cockburns go off half - cocked...........mindful of another couple of Brit journalists (?) Another Andrew (Sullivan) and Christopher Hitchens......
Wonder if any of them have ever read any blogs by ordinary Iraqi, and isn't Al-Sadr's temporary hold on action a big part of the current reduction in incidents..Also has it ever entered anyone's mind how controlled this can be by the US military officers......wanting the surge to appear successful by reducing patrols or other missions?
After all they have to take orders from the POTUS C-I-C and with his poll levels, he is desperate to make something look good.
I recall my history teacher in fifth grade - always warning us about that old adage--believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you read....I think there is more - memory that long ago -approx 60 years - grows dim but the message stuck with me. Current event clippings were brought to class, this being just prior to the US entering WW2.....and pupils had to defend whatever they chose to offer for discussion. Early training for developing discernment in journalistic reporting.
