The global temperature balance keeps the oceans moving via convection flow. This is where the main currents come from when one sails on the ocean.

As the global temperature increases the currents slow down and finally come to a halt. The Earth, much like a pinball machine, has a "tilt" function. Once the oceans stop it is only a 10 to 20 year change into what some would call a "nuclear winter" and another possible ice-age.

As the temperature increases the glaciers decrease in size.

Now, what are we going to do about it?

If you are tired of waiting for others to act in your behalf perhaps it is time to take action yourself. Think about ways to help the environment, post them here then gather resources so that others may join you in your fight. It is time for leaders to be leaders.

I think that the Republicans in Florida still don't comprehend why they had such a terrible succession of hurricanes, this year.

Well, it is just their communities, is all.

The effects of global warming are documented in reports of the "Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change" IPCC (http://www.ipcc.ch/). There is no question that the glaciers are melting - even there is a significant reduction of the Arctic ice - as can be seen at the NASA homepage.

To be honest - nobody knows whether the actual hurricanes in Florida are "caused" by global warming. But scientists are sure, that the probability of extreme weather conditions will increase, caused by global warming.

Global warming is mainly caused by CO2 emissions from burning of fossile fuels - oil, natural gas and coal. So it is directly linked to the consumption of energy. Therefor the energy issue is the key issue - not only for the world wide economy, for peace or war, but for the environment, too.

My impression was that John Kerry realized that.

There are a lot of possibilities what we can do to solve the problem. Most important are increasing energy efficiency and renewable energy. And this can be done regardless of the government you got. To develop and to produce components for an efficient use of energy - isn't that a typical action for the "can do people"? It was difficult to do in Europe - but we startet it and we were successful.

The folllowing info isn't very helpful in terms of action, but it's an important part of understading the problem.

Biologists have discovered an alarming drop in the krill populations of Arctic environments. Krill are a tiny shrimp-like creature that serve as a major food source for animals such as penguins, whales, and sea lions. The krill themselves feed off of algae that grows on the bottoms of ice chunks in the Arctic seas. Less ice means less algae, means less krill, means less penguins, etc...

for tons of environmental information and overwhelming evidence against the bush admin. go to:

it's unfortunatate that so many americans show so little concern for the world we are leaving for future generations. my 9 year old grandson has in the past 2 years become asthmatic. this is becoming an epidemic in our country (probably world-wide). we are all aware that president bush does give a damn about our kids but don't you think he'd at least want to protect his own?

i remember in the last debate that he said he prayed for his 'little girls.' well, i think it's time we all prayed for his little girls and our little boys and girls as well.

in the meantime, any change for the better is up to us. we cannot count on washington for anything. there is an article on the nrdc website talking about bush getting ready to drill for oil in the artic. very disturbing. something that really must be stopped.

i'd also like to encourage everybody to join the nrdc's activist network. you can do it on their site. you will receive updates by email and learn how to become involved.

Go to c-span 2 now and watch the information on global warming. This administration refuses to believe it even exists and couldn't be more "W" wrong!!

Hallo Patti Freschke - seen lots of your posts on the blog, I was comforted by that many times.

Well - I have found the following statement at the GWB page August 28th:

"A Realistic, Growth-Oriented Approach to Global Climate Change - President Bush has committed America to meeting the challenge of long-term global climate change by reducing the ratio of greenhouse gas emissions to economic output, or greenhouse gas intensity, by 18 percent by 2012 compared to 2002."

I did not find it again later. But it seems, even the Republicans are not sure that global warming does not exist. Well, 18% improvement in the intensity is not sufficient at all.
