Former US Congressman Jailed

A former US congressmen went from the halls of congress to the halls of justice and was jailed in Columbus after attempting to deliver a letter about voting irregularities to Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.

Dan Hamburg was a California congressman in the early 1990s. This week Hamburg and his wife have been part of a group watching the latest developments in the Ohio recount.

Columbus police arrested Hamburg and his wife, Carrie, Wednesday for trespassing after refusing to leave a private downtown building that houses the secretary's office. Hamburg was an elected democrat, then a green and then a libertarian candidate in California.

The political activist and a small group with him said they wanted Blackwell to answer questions about voting problems from the November election.

Blackwell's office says it was private tenants in the building who asked security to call the officers.

Hamburg did not have an appointment with Blackwell and refused to leave a restaurant.

Why isn't Blackwell's office in a public building? How odd.

I can't find the date on this story.
Is it just my old eyes?

This is the second or third time this article has been posted. We sould read the text before writing sensationalist subject lines.

The couple was arrested for trespassing in a private building, police were called by other tennants.

They were not arrested by Blackwell, they were not arrested for delivering a letter.

On Wed. Dec. 8th Former Congressman Dan Hamburg and his wife Carrie were arrested at 12 noon while trying to deliver a letter to Sec of State Ken Blackwell. During the press conference (see PR below) Dan and Carrie entered the lobby of the private Borden building at 180 Broad St, where Mr. Blackwell's publicly funded office is on the 16th floor.

Diaries :: ashke's diary ::

They had a letter http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/120404W.shtml from the Democratic House Judiciary Committee addressed to Mr. Blackwell asking 34 questions about the Ohio election irregularities. Mr. Blackwell was invited to answer these questions at a hearing at 10 am this morning. Mr. Blackwell was a no show, so we invited him to our press conference outside his office.

Because they were attempting to deliver the letter and a personal invitation to our press conference Dan and Carrie were arrested for trespass. This happened at the same time of the hearing going on in Washington, D.C.

At the hearing today http://www.truthout.org/cblog.shtml, http://www.votecobb.org (two action alert items listed here) in Washington, D.C., new instances of fraud regarding machine voting and voter suppression were detailed that Mr. Blackwell has not answered. The hearing will now be moved to Ohio to gather more evidence.

*Take Action*

On Thursday, Dec. 9th at 11am until 5pm we will picket the Governor's office at 77 S. High St. to demand Dan and Carrie's release and that the Ohio Electors not vote until the recount is finished. We will demand the removal of Mr. Blackwell as Sec. of State for delaying the recount and creating a legal limbo for the Ohio election results. Mr. Blackwell is the real criminal for suppressing the Black and Student vote in Ohio, which is a felony according to Ohio state law, civil rights law and the U.S. Constitution, 14th Amendment.

The Governor is accountable for the conduct of the election in his state and will bear responsibility if there is not a fair recount. He should remove Mr. Blackwell who is not doing his duty to be impartial in overseeing the election and recount and not responding to the US Congress.

Bring signs, noisemakers, drums and post this notice on lists and spread the word.

On Friday, December 10, we will picket 11am -5pm and ask for a meeting with the Governor.

On Saturday, we will precinct walk to gather evidence of fraud around Franklin County. If you know which precincts had the longest lines or want to gather evidence contact Evan Davis at 946-3834 evan@iwaynet.net

On Sunday, we will gather for a legal rally at the State House on High Street at 12 noon and march to the Federal Building. We do not need a permit since we will in public access areas and sidewalks.

I did not mean to infer that it is OK for a state officer to have publically funded offices in a private building.

I was saying that as it was a private building, "strangers" attract attention. From the photos I saw, these people did not look like Buckeyes. The tennants probably went on "high security" meltdown and called the department of homeland insecurity. "WE'RE BEING INVADED BY CALIFORNIA ECO-TERRORISTS!!!"

A state officer should NOT have a publically-funded office in a private building.

Many state and federal offices do exist in "leased" space......thats pretty common. Other tennants calling the police, may be the restraunt owners not wanting a scene. But either our it did get some attention and that's what it takes sometimes.

As far as I'm aware, Ken Blackwell's office IS in a public building in Columbus. These people seemed to have shown up somewhere where Blackwell was, NOT at his office. It seems to me, the restaurant called the police because they were harassing one of their patrons. The restaurant is completely legitimate in calling the authorities in that case.
