JFK speechwriter to Obama: Tap Hagel

QUOTE
A former Kennedy White House speechwriter said Thursday that Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel would be a good running mate for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Ted Sorensen, who collaborated with John F. Kennedy on the 1957 Pulitzer Prize-winning "Profiles in Courage," said Obama should pick a running mate who can help where he's weakest. Hagel's national security experience makes him a logical candidate, Sorensen said.

"I don't think Mrs. Clinton fits those criteria," Sorensen said, referring to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who suspended her campaign after Obama clinched the nomination. "But I think a Republican would. And I'm from Nebraska. I think Chuck Hagel might make a great national ticket vice presidential nominee."

QUOTE
In an interview after the speech with The Associated Press, Sorensen said Hagel served his country with tremendous honor in Vietnam, and has "first-rate experience on national security issues."

"I've never recalled a point in this country where putting the country and national security first seems to make more sense, rather than putting the party first," Sorensen said.

Hagel served as an Army sergeant in Vietnam and was twice wounded in 1968, earning two Purple Hearts.

Caroline Kennedy, the late president's daughter, is on Obama's vice presidential search committee, and Sorensen said he has spoken to her about the selection.

Senator Hagles brother who also served in Vietnam is a Democrat.
If Senator Hagel would be asked would he have to switch parties?
I am not sure he would. He did tick off Republican Congress though.

Hagel Would Consider Veep Offer
Omaha, NE.- Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel says while he hasn't been asked he would consider running for vice-president with Democrat Barack Obama.

Hagel's comment coming as Obama clearly puts Nebraska voters on his wish list, running a campaign commercial in Omaha.

Nebraska Democrats say the ad is the first but not the last folks in Omaha will see from Obama.

Obama's decision to fight in Republicans states like Nebraska, states Democrats usually ignore, is fueled by Obama's decision to reject public financing.

John McCain is criticizing Obama, "He's completely reversed himself and gone back on his word not to me but to the commitment he made to the American people."

According to Hagel Obama's reversal is not a big deal. "I've never talked to Obama about it, but I think this is one of those procedural issues more than anything else."

As for that continuing "veep" talk Hagel says, "I've not had any discussions with anybody about being anybody's vice-president."

A few weeks ago Nebraska's Democratic State Chairman Steve Achepohl told Action 3 News he can't believe Obama would pick Hagel.

And most insiders think Hagel is a long shot at best.

But keep one thing in mind Hagel has said little if anything bad about Obama.

I think Senator Obama should not pick a Senator for VP from either party. The democratic
Leadership of the Senate has caved into too many of Bush's questionable deals and Barack Obama,
himself is close to this democratic leadership. He needs to gather his alliances from other power bases.

I agree and that would be a reason to accept Hillary's return to the Senate.
