In a series of blog posts for the Columbia Journalism Review, CJR Contributing Editor Trudy Lieberman takes the press to task for its under-coverage of both candidates' proposals for health insurance reform. And she explains why Obama's plan is neither 'national' nor 'universal.'

note from cute cat: she takes McCain's plan on also to a freighting point for people with pre- existing medical conditions ( geno a no no?)

It's a story that all should listen to. It's the reason why I don't get all excited about either candidates health plan. For Health Care to change - people are going to have to get behind it and 'chew' all the details up to really get a grasp on all the issues. That's not nearly as appealing as dissecting a war for most.

Is McCain's plan the same one that Bush talked about?
The thing that concerned me here was that employers already will not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions.

That would mean anything you have to take medication for and yet is controlled. If your blood is tested for dosage levels or medication side effects every month, 3 months or a year; you do not qualify because it is considered a recent medical treatment.

They eliminate people with seizures, diabetics. any one on blood thinners or other heart medications. Thyroid or a history of Cancer.

Health Care, as currently espoused by both candidates, will not be the major
issue I vote on...because they don't seem to have a handle on fiscal reality.

I expect all the hub-bub to peter out...like former attempts. Programs
like Social Security, which have been borrowed against (improperly IMO)
like an ATM, ought to be made solvent before any new major entitlement
even gets into the legislative committee rooms.
