Estonian volunteers join Georgian army

TBILISI. Aug 14 (Interfax) - Fifty Estonian volunteers were
enlisted in the Georgian army on Thursday, chief of the Georgian Defense
Ministry International Relations Department Nino Bakradze told reporters
later in the day.
"The Estonian government sent its servicemen to protect Georgia's
sovereignty and ensure a Russian troop withdrawal from Georgian
territory," she said.

Bakradze thanked the "Estonian people and Estonian government on
behalf of the people and government of Georgia".
Meanwhile, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office Investigative
Committee has announced that foreign mercenaries were among the Georgian
troops that stormed Tskhinvali.
"Evidence obtained during interviews with Tskhinvali residents
shows that citizens of several foreign states were taking part in the
attack," the committee's spokesman Igor Komissarov told reporters on
Thursday.
Earlier this week, the Russian General Staff confirmed that foreign
citizens participated in Georgia's military operations in South Ossetia.
"We have met black-skin Georgians and others, with foreign
passports - who are indeed fighting on the Georgian side," Deputy Chief
of the Russian General Staff Anatoly Nagovitsin told a press conference
in Moscow on August 11.
An Estonian infantry company, Estcoy-6, is serving in Afghanistan.
At least three Estonians have been wounded in Helmand province recently.

in another thread i just warned about blatant lies in russian media. keep that in mind when reading interfax..
heart
I don't believe anything the Govt says over there....but it's not my area of expertise I guess so I don't really know what is true.

However, the Estonians are very brave, and I am very impressed and thankful that someone in Europe had the compassion to go help those in need. Thank You!!

you're welcome.

it is not that we don't feel empathy for georgia - attacked by russia and who knows, on how much factual ground was there for the 'call of aid'... maybe even more so, as it could be repeated easily enough in northeastern estonia - arrange some fights, maybe deaths - and them come to 'aid' "co-nationals"...

and there were initially near 200 signups, some of whom were not chosen for various reasons, and some who had to withdraw for various reasons. with more publicity, time to rearrange lives and more certainty about assignment, there would've been more.

and there are american relief workers on the ground in georgia, too. not forgotten, either.
