"Koit" ("Dawn"), performed by Tõnis Mägi
gabriellemy
mms://teleportal.neti.tv/etv24/2008-08-20_AK_66laulupidu.wmv

news clip, includes the part of the President's speech where he notes how 40 years ago, 1968, we left Czechoslovakia alone when tanks rolled in; now, 40 years later, we did not leave Georgia alone, and that international pressure will make tanks leave in the end. ( ...niikuinii" is paraphrasing "ükskord me võidame niikuinii" - one day (eventually) we shall win, in essence similar to "we shall overcome")

i wish i could embed videos here youtube style

"Ei ole üksi ükski maa"

in estonian, "maa" means land, country, earth, even soil. estonian counties end with -maa and the song is about them.

the song was response to the soviet plan to start mining for phosphorus in northeast estonia - already suffering from pollution from factories and coal mining. water from wells was already flammable, and the possible consequences could have been disastrous. brought people together in what was named "phosphorite war" and ended in cancelling the plan.

so - "no land is alone"

well, i have to admit i misspelt: 3rd is "Eestlane olen ja eestlaseks jään", what i wrote comes a little bit more into the song. i'll try not to listen to one at the same time.

That one reminded me of "We are the World."

Thanks for sharing, gabriellemy. I remember when you posted the pics of all the folks in native dress last year - they were beautiful.

Yes. They are truly beautiful. It's so nice to see a person so proud of their country and proud of celebrating it too.

Thanks for letting us see a bit of your wonderful land and people.

thank you. and i do recommend the videos, even cellphone quality: hearing about 1/10 of estonians sing, even faintly, is quite a thing.
