"When people make do with beliefs, not knowing what else to base their faith on, it is as if they have been hypnotized. By hypnotizing someone, you can persuade him, for instance, that he is at a banquet. When he becomes conscious again, he is even able to describe the menu in detail and declares how satisfied he is with everything he has eaten and drunk. Yet his stomach is empty, and on this diet he would quickly collapse. Well, credulity is a form of hypnosis: certain people believe what they are told to believe or what they want to believe, despite all evidence to the contrary. This explains why most people are misled by their beliefs, whereas those who know how to work on faith and with faith savour fruits each day that are very real and nourishing. Faith is always the product of experience. "

"Style is what counts most in the eyes of many people, and it is what they most appreciate in books. It doesn’t matter that the subject matter is completely run of the mill, vulgar or even scandalous, or that the writer flouts all moral principles. What is important is style. If its style is new and original, we are supposed to marvel before this masterpiece! But why have people become so obsessed? What would they say if they were given a package wrapped in silk paper and magnificent ribbons, and upon opening it they found that it was it empty… or that it contained refuse, or poison, or an asphyxiating gas? It is important to have a suitable box, an attractive presentation, a beautiful wrapping, but the object within must always have more value and beauty than its envelope. The form is there only as protection, to keep the contents intact, not to draw so much attention to itself that the contents are forgotten."

"There is something in human beings that drives them to surpass themselves, to excel. The proof: are mountaineers made to attempt the ascent of ever higher and more inaccessible peaks? Are swimmers and runners made to swim and run faster and faster? Are chess players forced to reflect for hours at a time before moving a pawn on the chessboard? No, it is they themselves who feel compelled to undertake these feats and solve these problems. And what joy they experience each time they succeed! This is why human beings have invented so many activities, games and competitions of every kind! It clearly demonstrates that in the depths of their being they feel the need to continually push beyond their own limits. But why doesn’t it occur to them to apply in their everyday lives the same qualities of endurance, skill and intelligence they demonstrate in games and competitions? When they have to make these efforts, why do they always complain?"

Conversely, those who, having failed to carefully examine their plans, persist in the wrong direction may at first seem to succeed, but sooner or later they fail. So before leaping into something, do your homework. And especially when you are offered a tempting proposition, you must be more cautious and prudent than ever. If you are offered money, honours, power or pleasure, beware! True and lasting success is not generally acquired easily, but through study and work."

"Because there is a link between what is above and what is below, be aware that every impulse from your higher nature may provoke a reaction from your lower nature, which will do all it can to make you abandon your good intentions. These tricks of the lower nature prove unsuccessful in the disciple who has made a habit of analysing himself and who remains vigilant, for while he works, meditates and builds on the spiritual plane, he attracts and surrounds himself with invisible beings who watch over him and protect him. In early freemasonry, which was based on a true science, the mason was portrayed at work with a trowel in one hand and a sword for self-defence in the other. The mason symbolizes the disciple: while he builds, another being within him, represented by the sword, keeps watch and projects a beam of light. He is thus assured that certain enemies do not slip in under cover of darkness and destroy his work."

"‘I am the good shepherd,’ said Jesus. ‘I know my own and my own know me.’ In the same way, man is a shepherd of the cells of his body and must protect them from the wolves looking to breach the sheepfold. What do these wolves represent? They are not only microbes and viruses, but evil spirits of the invisible world, the undesirables that endlessly assail us. He who wants to be a good shepherd to his sheep must learn the truths of the divine world and observe the laws of nature. In doing so, he makes contact with the realms of light, and from on high he projects rays onto his cells in order to chase away the ‘wolves’ that have found their way into him. This is Christ’s teaching. The true teaching of Christ tells us that we must place all our trust in the power of light, in the power of the spirit which animates, strengthens and liberates. It is then that, like Jesus, we become good shepherds to our flock."

"A spiritual master has meditated a very long time on the love of God and the best way of expressing it. When he puts his faith in human beings, therefore, it is not because he needs them or hopes to benefit personally from them. By putting his faith in them he throws them a line and gives them a chance, for we never know, it is always possible for their divine nature to find a way of expressing itself. But of course the master must be very strong, because when he uses this method he has to expect everything, the best as well as the worst. When you yourself become sufficiently strong, you will be able to extend your faith to all beings, without fear that you will suffer or be shattered if they fail to live up to this faith. In the meantime, you must study and practise!"

"Everyone knows how to draw a circle using a compass. We place the point on the paper to establish the centre, and by holding firmly to this centre we are able to trace the circumference. The centre comes first, then, and we can only draw the circumference if we hold to this centre. By establishing the circle as a symbol of creation, the initiates wanted to emphasize the idea that everything that exists has a link with the centre and can only survive by preserving and maintaining this link. It is impossible for anyone who cuts his ties with the centre to have a clear idea of the world or the entities and forces which work in it, but he also deprives himself of the current of pure life which flows from the Source, from God himself. The equilibrium of cosmic life is based on the relationship which the periphery unceasingly maintains with the centre. All parts must converge on the centre, for it is the centre that sustains their existence. An example of this relationship between centre and periphery is our solar system, where the planets tirelessly orbit the sun in harmonious movement. "

Faults such as selfishness, anger, rage, jealousy, rudeness and lack of conscience are contained in the word ‘take’, and qualities such as goodness, generosity, indulgence and self-denial are contained in the word ‘give’. Everything we do can serve as an opportunity to give, to show ourselves more understanding and selfless in our relations with others, as we strive to love rather than to be loved."

Therefore, if you want to keep their friendship, be vigilant and try to increase these moments of silence so you can participate with these beings in spreading the light. This is how humanity changes and evolves according to its needs. Necessity, therefore, is the mother of invention in all spheres of life. We can observe these same laws in the artistic and spiritual realms. Why are there so few artists who create sublime works? Because there are very few people who are capable of appreciating them. The enlightened desires and needs of a few cannot influence artistic creation as a whole. And if the kingdom of God has not yet been realized on earth, it is because there are so few who feel the need for it. "Instead of admitting that people turn away from religion because its representatives are not up to their task and don’t know how to speak about the truths of faith, some Christians continue to blame the Devil… who has apparently sneaked his way into the Church! But the truth is that if people do not have elements within themselves likely to attract the Devil, and if their doors are not open to him, he is powerless. Why do Christians give him the power to enter anywhere he wants, with no one to stop him? Have human beings been so badly designed (the Lord certainly didn’t know how to go about it!) that the Devil is powerful enough to steal his way into their midst, and into them? Of course not; it is important to understand that no negative force can gain entry anywhere without permission. But before describing how all the elements of the universe appeared – the sun, moon, stars, vegetation, animals and man – Moses wrote a phrase which can only be interpreted in the light of initiatic Science: ‘a wind from God swept over the face of the waters’. Why over the waters? Because these waters represent chaos, the original formless matter which God, the primordial fire, penetrated and fertilized. Water is the matrix of life; life came out of water, but through the action of fire. Therefore water, whose primary characteristic is adaptability, symbolizes the raw material on which spirit works to produce forms."

And even those who do want to hear it rarely have the strength to tolerate it. A master is always revealing the truth, of course, but by this we mean the laws and methods which enable the disciple to do a great work on himself and, as a result of this preparatory work, to gain access to the truth. Otherwise, what happens? First, there are those who cannot understand, no matter what you say to them, and this is a waste of the master’s time. Then there are those who misunderstand and unconsciously use this truth to harm others and themselves. Finally there are those who refuse to accept the truth because it disturbs them: it goes against what they consider their own interests. Yes, he who wants to reveal the truth to people exposes himself to a great deal of misunderstanding."

Once we have incarnated into our physical body, we no longer remember the regions we passed through, the experiences we had or the discoveries we made. But it is all there, inscribed within us. Those who wish to recover this knowledge, to access this age-old memory, must now live according to the laws of initiatic Science and submit to certain rules and practices taught by the great masters of humanity. There is a simple explanation: the former had extraordinary faith, great selflessness and very pure blood, whereas the latter allowed impurities to penetrate them. The purity of your thoughts and feelings, which the purity of the blood depends on, resists illness. Perfect balance would not only mean stagnation but a return to an original, undifferentiated state. As long as creation is not complete, the cosmic scales continue to swing. "There is one justice, and there are two injustices. You don’t believe me? Well, let me explain. When you go to the greengrocers to buy a kilo of cherries, he can give you exactly a kilo… or a little less… or a little more. In the first instance he is being just, and in the other two he is being unjust, but of course the second injustice is most welcome to his customers. They wish everyone were as unjust as this good man, whereas the first injustice does not please them at all. So you see, we have one justice and two injustices. People are always advised to be just. Well, on the contrary, I am going to advise you to be unjust, in other words to learn to work with love. Yes, love is the greatest injustice there is: whether the person deserves it or not, you give him something. Maybe no one has ever classified love as an injustice, but I repeat: love is a magnificent injustice, and I advise all of you to be unjust in precisely this way!"

"According to the law of correspondences set forth by Hermes Trismegistus in the Emerald Tablet, everything below is like that which is above, and everything above is like that which is below. This means that on earth there is a visible, tangible expression of the inaccessible world of truth. The sun is this expression. Yes, truth, like the sun, allows us to see things clearly. This is why among the five virtues – love, wisdom, truth, goodness and justice – it is truth that is linked to the eyes. You say you are looking for truth? Can you not see it right there in front of you, in the form of the sun? While you continue to search for it in the darkness, the sun continues to shine. Try to realize at last what it is saying to you: ‘Look at me, try to become like me. I will come and live in you, and you will possess the truth.’"

"Meditate on the power of the sun which penetrates the earth with its rays. Thanks to these rays the earth is covered with leaves, flowers and fruits. The entire world is nourished by this penetration of the earth by the sun’s rays. And there is a great work you yourself can do by means of meditation and concentration which will allow the sun’s rays to penetrate you, just as food, water and air penetrate you. Yes, this is possible: by becoming conscious that the sun communicates its life to you with its rays, you prepare to receive them. You open thousands of doors within yourself by which these rays can enter. And not only will you improve your health, you will purify your feelings and illuminate your thoughts."

"In spring when the trees come into bloom again, they put on new finery. People are happy to go out and gaze at them, and they have a good feeling in their presence. The same is true where human beings are concerned. Why do you find someone more attractive at certain moments than at others? His physical appearance hasn’t changed, but you love him because he is covered in flowers, symbolically speaking. We don’t love trees when they are drab and bare. Therefore, if you feel you aren’t loved, or you are no longer loved, say to yourself: ‘I’m passing through winter, but should I allow that to upset me? No, I’ll work, and spring will come back again.’ If you become discouraged, it means you haven’t understood that life perpetually changes. Even though right now you are passing through winter, keep your faith; the spirit will come again, and you will blossom anew."

"Every religion has one day specially set aside for worship. Thisis fine, but what difference does it make in God’s eyes whether it is Friday, Saturday, Sunday or any other day? None. For him, all days are equally sacred and blessed, and they should be so for us as well. What sense does it make to forget the Lord for six days while you spend your time in material, prosaic activities, and then on the seventh day finally turn your attention to him by worshipping him for an hour or two in a building dedicated to this purpose? What state will you be in when you come before him if you have lived six days in unconsciousness and triviality? Do you think he appreciates such hypocrisy? What good will such an attitude do you? You must not delude yourself; how you live the seventh day depends on how you have lived the other six. It is on a daily basis that you must strive to come closer to God."

"Because it is invisible, most people have neither faith nor trust in the power of the divine world, which enlightens, guides and sustains those who work according to its laws. They prefer to place their trust in the calculations and schemes of their lower nature, which by way of their intellect endlessly misleads them. This is why they never reach their goals: the divine world obstructs them inwardly and outwardly. On the other hand, those who respect the laws and rely on heaven are never abandoned. Even if the whole world rejects them or persecutes them, they are sustained, encouraged and enlightened. If you persist in feeding false notions within you, life will take it upon itself to show you that you are wrong, until you finally understand what and who merits your trust."

"If we reduce religion to precepts which we are to accept independently of the experience and actions which should go along with them, we separate religion from faith, leaving nothing but beliefs which will save no one. The lazy are never saved. What results can we expect when there is no inner work, no effort or experimentation? It is said in the Gospels that faith can move mountains. But as long as believers repeat formulas, gestures and rituals without understanding their meaning and purpose, their faith will neither move mountains nor work miracles. When I speak of miracles, it is not a question of curing the sick or bringing the dead back to life, but of our own transformation and healing, our own resurrection."

"Disciples think it is boring to do the same exercises, recite the same prayers and observe the same rules of conduct every day. But why don’t they find it boring to eat the same bread and drink the same water three times a day? Every day they take more or less the same food, which enables them to learn, work, love and live. Well, it is essential to nourish oneself on the spiritual level as well, and not just once a week or once a month! Every day you must take in the same celestial nourishment so that you become capable of living the life of the soul and the spirit. The children of God know how to eat the bread of heaven. They understand that it brings them life, and that they in turn can offer a few particles of this life to their friends."

"It is always man, by his own inner life, who determines the conditions he has to live in. Suppose someone is reduced to building himself a miserable shack with a few planks and some sheet metal. Naturally he will suffer in such discomfort, but what is the real cause of his suffering: is it the material conditions, in other words the shack, or did he get himself into this mess? Whether through laziness, incompetence or something completely different, wasn’t it he who failed to find the means to live in better conditions? ‘Yes,’ you will say, ‘but if he is in such dire straits, it is because he was born into a wretched family who taught him nothing. His present situation is the result of unfortunate conditions from the start.’ But this is so only in appearance, for if he was born into such a family, it was because he did nothing in previous incarnations to deserve better. Material conditions are always the consequences of a process, and man himself is the cause."

"As soon as hostilities cease between warring factions, we hear people speak of ‘unity’. Otherwise this notion is quite neglected. People expect that if unity is to be created, there must be enemies somewhere to fight. No, this is not unity in the true sense. True unity does not fight anyone or exclude anyone, quite the opposite. He who works to rise by means of thought all the way to the summit, to this unity, begins to sense that all human beings are connected. And it is true: we all form a unity on high in the divine world, for not only are we each a cell in the great cosmic body, but the small cell that we are is also a microcosm of this body as a whole. It is a serious mistake to believe that since others exist outside of us we will not suffer as a result of the harm we can do to them. When we do harm to others, we do harm to ourselves as well, even if we do not realize it at the time."

"The discovery by physicists that waves travel throughout space should have prompted specialists in other disciplines to extend their research into the psychic domain. To produce radios capable of receiving programmes from around the world is wonderful, but the human brain also is a device which sends and receives waves, and investigations conducted in this domain would be far more significant. Of course, telepathy is now recognized by certain scientists, but how many of them have drawn conclusions from it with regard to education and the mastery of thought? And this is not all: now that researchers have ascertained that waves know no boundaries, they should make unflagging efforts to awaken people’s consciousness so that everyone everywhere works to abolish the frontiers between countries and cultures."

"Suffering is painful, of course, and we naturally try to avoid it. But if we did not suffer, we would never make the decision to transform ourselves. And since it is impossible to avoid suffering, instead of rebelling against it we must understand its usefulness, for it is a fire that burns away impurities. It is imperative to understand this property of fire: it never destroys anything which is of the same nature as itself. When it penetrates man, it burns only his impurities. Matter which is pure is not consumed; it resists fire and becomes luminous, because it vibrates in unison with fire. This is the matter that forms our body of glory, our body of light, of which the Scriptures speak. When an initiate succeeds in lighting the divine fire within himself, he sets the matter of his being ablaze and shines like a sun."

"To love and be loved, to give and receive love: this is what human beings need more than anything. And the truth is that their need to love is even greater than their need to be loved. It is only our love for others that stimulates and inspires us; it is the greatest source of blessings. This is why you must never prevent your heart from loving. Never stop loving all creation and all creatures, and at the same time always seek the best way to express your love. In today’s world, of course, you must also act with prudence. If you expose your love too much, you run the risk of being exploited, so in these matters, wisdom must come and have its say. It will teach you to show restraint without killing your love, and yourself along with it. Yes, in most cases it is better not to show your love, but to guard it within you so it can do its work."

"Human beings tend to think they are the only ones in the universe who are truly alive and intelligent. Well, they are wrong, and because of this mistaken idea, death has had a firm grip on their culture and mentality for centuries. If you want to be truly alive and intelligent, consider everything around you – stones, trees, mountains, sky and sun – to be as alive and intelligent as you are, and even more so. This is the psychology of the initiates. As long as human beings imagine they are the only thinking creatures – that the rest of the universe does not think, feel or understand – they cannot progress. If you think of the sun as an intelligent, living being, it will instruct you. One day the entire world will have to recognize this truth."

"The Christian ritual of Communion, that part of the service in which the priest consecrates the bread and wine and distributes it to the faithful, recalls the last supper Jesus celebrated with his disciples. But it is not Jesus who instituted this rite. Evidence that it existed well before him is found in Genesis, which recounts that Melchisedek, high priest of the Almighty, went to meet Abraham bearing bread and wine. Communion is a fundamental act of the spiritual life, and we do not need to receive a host or bread and wine blessed by a priest in order to commune. Every day at each meal you can receive Communion through the intermediary of the food you eat. Yes, every one of you can become a high priest – it is our inner calling in the face of the Eternal – and stand before your cells to officiate and give them food and drink. If you play this role consciously, your cells will receive something sacred, and you will feel their joy as they perform at last the task for which they were destined."
