Hi all just looking for opions about the reasons for war in Iraq, some may and some my not agree with me on this subject but this just my thoughts. In recent days I have been thinking about what Saddam may have had on his mind prior to the U.S. invasion. From what I have heard in recent days Iraq was on the verge of becoming a failed state and was hardly capable of mounting an effictive war with it's neighbors much less being able to somehow hit the United States. And from what I hear al-Qaida dispised him for his teatment of the muslim population. It seems to me that attacking the United States was probly not on Saddam's top 10 to do list, I mean this man seems like he was struggling just to hold on to power and keep from being killed or overthrown by his own people. Ok this opion my not be the most popular with everyone but lets assume that Saddam really had stock piles of wepons of mass destruction, how the hell could he use them aginst the U.S. without any kind of effictive dilivery system, and even if he somehow could attack the U.S. This man shurely would have known that there would be swift and deadly retalliation and I just don't think Saddam would have risked it. He had a very easy life with giant palaces and lived the life of a king. Please post any and all opions I would like to know what everyone here thinks.

Rather than have everybody go over ground already covered methinks I'd respectfully suggest you read through target='_blank'>this thread and then ask any questions you still have there.

Added on edit: Duplicate threads on what is essentially the same subject IMHO muddy the waters and degrade the quality of the discussion.

I agree with flydangler. This subject is located in many other threads- Civilian Control of the Military being the one that first comes to mind. And, not to be trite, but check your spelling before you post- especially when starting a new thread. We are all responding quickly, so there will be mistypes, but consistant misspellings are hard to handle. Or maybe it's just me- I'm an English teacher... lol.gif

Although I think that reviewing the reasons and motivations for invading Iraq is comparable to staring into the rear view mirror while driving down the open road, I did hear an interesting explanation for why Saddam Hussein treated the UN weapons inpectors so suspiciously before the invasion. It was not that he was hiding something, but rather that he wanted Iran to think that he was hidding something. You may remember that Iran and Iraq fought an eight year long war, and it appears that Saddam still viewed Iran as a potential enemy. What I think is especially interesting about this is that it pokes a big hole in the Ameri-centric view of the world. While we in America believed that all Saddam thought about all day long was how to exact revenge on the US, in fact, he was actually paying far more attention to Iran. So then, not only did he not have WMD, which I think is already well established, but he was not nearly as concerned with the US as he was with his neighbors.

One reason for the war was the rumor that Iraq and other oil producing states were going to start demanding Euros or gold in payment for oil. The dollar world currency house of cards would have come down fast. At least now the dollar's slide can be managed to not cause an economic collapse world wide. The WMD was rational was total BS. Iraq never had the means after 1992 to do the WMD programs.
