Protesters Urge Delay for Ohio Electors

1 hour, 22 minutes ago

JOHN McCARTHY, Associated Press Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio - As it has done for 200 years, Ohio's delegation to the Electoral College (news - web sites) is to meet Monday to cast ballots for president and vice president — but this time, there are demands that the electors wait until after a recount. A demonstration was held Sunday as about 100 people gathered outside the Ohio Statehouse to protest the delegation's vote.

The Electoral College's vote in the Ohio Senate chamber is expected to be accompanied by demonstrations outside the Capitol sponsored by groups who don't accept that President Bush (news - web sites) won the key swing state by 119,000 votes, guaranteeing his victory over Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites).

Led by a coalition representing the Green and Libertarian parties, the dissidents are paying for recounts in each of Ohio's 88 counties that will begin this week. The recount is not expected to be complete until next week.

"John Kerry conceded so early in the process that it's maddening," said Kat L'Estrange of We Do Not Concede, an activist group born after the election that believes Kerry was the real winner in Ohio and nationally.

L'Estrange, Susan Truitt of the Columbus-based Citizens Alliance for Secure Elections, and others demanded that the electoral vote be put off until the recount is completed.

"In Ohio, there has not been a final determination. Therefore, any meeting of the Electoral College in Ohio prior to a full recount would in fact be an illegitimate gathering," said John Bonifaz of the National Voting Rights Institute.

The dissidents claim there were disparities in vote totals for Democrats, too few voting machines in Democrat-leaning precincts, organized campaigns directing voters to the wrong polling place and confusion over the counting of provisional ballots by voters whose names did not appear in the books at polling places.

The Kerry campaign does not dispute that Bush won the election, but supports the Ohio recount. Kerry issued a statement Wednesday saying reported voting problems should be investigated to ensure there are no doubts in future elections.

Monday's Electoral College vote will follow the same script it has since 1804, when Ohio picked Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic Republican, over Federalist Charles C. Pinckney.

The electors will gather in the Senate chamber and cast votes for president, then vice president, on separate paper ballots. The ballots are counted by representatives of Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell's office and then handed to Blackwell, who is the presiding officer of the electoral vote.

Blackwell then signs a "transmittal" of the vote total and sends it to the president of the U.S. Senate, who will announce the national total on Jan. 6.

Ohio's electors are a mix of GOP officials and others who are being rewarded for service to the party.

"It's a great honor to serve as a member of the Electoral College and it's a great honor to vote for President Bush," said Alex Arshinkoff, longtime chairman of the Summit County Republican Party who is an elector for the second straight meeting.

Karyle Mumper, chairwoman of the Marion County Republican Party, will be an elector for the first time. She, too, feels honored but believes the demonstrations outside will be a distraction.

"It's a shame they do not believe in the honesty and the professional people working the polls," said Mumper. "I just think they are sore losers and money and time (for the recount) could be spent on other things."

This is nice....but ONLY about 100 protestors. Protestors speak in volumes and in order to do anything we need more than just 100 protestors. We need Repuke convention numbers of protestors

Yes but isn't this a conflict of interest?

Ohio's electors are a mix of GOP officials and others who are being rewarded for service to the party.

Why are these people being rewarded?

I don't know.... I thought that was par for the course on electors. I thought electors were based on who won the elction. If it was Kerry that won, it would have been Dems who would have been going rather than GOP electors going.

but the Ohio recount could never finish because of Blackwell. We don't know who really won and now they vote tomorrow?

What about Arnebeck's lawsuit? I keep asking, he keeps putting off filing it.
Is he full of hot air? Will it change anything?

don't know we also have this problem as well

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AND INVESTIGATION:
More Votes than Voters in Ohio:
Absentee Vote Inflated, Certified Vote in Doubt
A careful review of the absentee vote in one Ohio county revealed that many more absentee votes were cast than there were absentee voters identified.

All absentee voters must be identified as such by name and residence in the precinct poll books of the precinct in which they are registered. Over 100 precinct poll books in Trumbull County were checked for absentee voters and that number of actual absentee voters was compared to the certified number of absentee votes. There was an inflated difference in nearly every precinct of the five communities examined. The five communities whose poll books were carefully inspected for an absentee vote overcount are: Warren City (311), Howland TownshipThe 106 precincts of these five Ohio communities, about 39% of all precincts in Trumbull County, netted a total of 580 absentee votes for which there were no absentee voters identified in the poll books.

“When there are more votes than voters, there is a big problem” stated Dr. Werner Lange, author of this study which would have been completed weeks earlier if Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, co-chair of the Ohio Bush-Cheney campaign, had not unlawfully ordered all 88 boards of elections to prevent public inspection of poll books until after certification of the vote.

I know...

but I thought they were still going to recount despite the meeting of the electors or are they STILL being prevented by 'Bendict Arnold' Blackwell

not for sure

That's why I keep asking if Arnebeck is full of hot air, or if he is slyly holding out to create an even bigger ruckus. The way he talked last week was that he MUST file the suit to stop the electors from being certified, then the date to file got pushed back daily. I've heard differing opinions about what happens if they are certified, THEN the vote count is changed. That could be a constitutional crisis. Psychologically, I think once the electors are certified, it will be very, very difficult to conduct a REAL recount of the votes. It will be half-hearted at best.

This nation was founded by people that had a dream to be free. People have died in many wars in the name of freedom for this country. People of Ohio please remember this tomorrow and protest the Electoral College when they go to meet at the Senate chamber. Anyone that can travel there and join in. Without a vote we are not citizens, we are subjects! mad.gif

Please mention what time they are meeting: if it is early in the morning, later in the day, etc. I don't imagine the whole process would take very long...

He said on Air America that it will be filed Monday morning appro. 9 am . I think there are about 40 Ohioans involved now, with Rev. Bill Moss as lead plantiff. The lawsuit should be titled Moss v Bush

Couple this with Kerry's request, a possible small demonstration, and hopefully a request for the Supreme Court to suspend Blackwell from duty while he faces fraud and cover up charges. That'll make Ohio's Monday worth the coffee.

In Georgia hopefully some people will ask that the Lemme case will be re-opened as a homicide.

In Florida hopefully someone will bark loud about the Feeney/Yang case and it's ties to Florida officials. >>/.

That is what it takes to get media attention then lets do it.
